The McKamey's - circa 2017-2018

The McKameys were one of the most respected and enduring family groups in Southern gospel music, with deep roots in Tennessee’s musical tradition. Formed in 1954 in East Tennessee by sisters Peg, Dora, and Carol McKamey, the group began singing in their home church before expanding to churches and revivals across the region. Known for their rich harmonies, heartfelt performances, and strong faith-centered message, they quickly built a devoted following.

In 1957, Ruben Bean joined the group as a guitarist and later married Peg. After Dora and Carol retired in 1972, Peg and Ruben’s daughters, Connie and Sheryl, joined in 1973, continuing the family legacy. The group became full-time in 1980, and despite lineup changes over the years, they remained a consistent presence in gospel music.

Beginning in the 1980s, The McKameys achieved major success, including hosting the long-running “Hometown Sing” event in Clinton, Tennessee. They produced numerous gospel hits such as “God On The Mountain,” “I Made It By Grace,” “Right On Time,” and “The Shepherd’s Point Of View.” Their music dominated the Singing News charts across the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s, ultimately earning a record 20 number-one songs.

Beyond their recordings and performances, The McKameys influenced countless gospel artists and inspired generations through their dedication to ministry and music. Their longevity and consistency helped solidify their reputation as a cornerstone of Southern gospel and an essential part of Tennessee’s musical heritage.

After 65 years of ministry, The McKameys retired from full-time touring in November 2019, with Peg McKamey Bean having been part of the group for its entire history. Their legacy as trailblazers in Southern gospel continues to be celebrated, reflecting the spirit and tradition of the genre.
