The Speer Family - Mid 1940's

The Speer Family (2026 Inductee)

The Speer Family was one of the most influential groups in Southern Gospel history, founded in 1921 by George Thomas “Dad” Speer, his wife Lena “Mom” Speer, and relatives Pearl and Logan Claborn. After the Claborns left around 1925, Dad and Mom gradually built the group around their children—Brock, Rosa Nell, Mary Tom, and Ben—establishing a strong family-centered musical tradition. All of the children contributed vocally and instrumentally, with Brock and Ben remaining core members throughout the group’s entire career.

In the 1930s and 40s, the Speer Family gained recognition through radio broadcasts and partnerships with songbook companies, helping shape the growth of gospel music. As the years passed, membership expanded to include many talented non-family performers, including long-time tenor Harold Lane and a succession of soprano pianists. Despite the passing of Dad and Mom Speer in 1966 and 1967, the group chose to continue, maintaining their influence for another three decades.

The Speer Family rose to national prominence in the 1960s and 70s through television appearances on programs like the Gospel Singing Jubilee. They became consistent chart performers, achieving number-one songs such as “What Sins Are You Talking About” (1979), “Saved To The Uttermost” (1989), and “He’s Still In The Fire” (1990). They also demonstrated creativity in projects like their concept video for “City Coming Down.”

Dad Speer was not only a leader but also a prolific songwriter, penning many gospel classics including “I Never Shall Forget The Day,” “O The Glory Did Roll,” “Daniel Prayed,” “Sweeter Each Day,” “The Dearest Friend I Ever Had,” and “Heaven’s Jubilee.” His songwriting helped define the sound and message of gospel music for generations.

After 77 years in full-time ministry, the Speer Family retired in 1998, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of gospel music’s foundational groups. Members of the family were honored with induction into the SGMA Hall of Fame, and their influence continued through occasional reunions and later groups such as the New Speer Revival and the New Speer Family, formed by descendants to carry on their musical heritage.
